Shepherd's pie is a classic Irish dish that's hearty, savory, and oh-so-delicious. This recipe is easy comfort food and requires just a few simple ingredients. Cheddar cheese on top is more North American, so you can leave it off. But, we're telling you, it makes it extra tasty. Cottage pie is made with lamb and is perhaps more traditional. We have a recipe for that, too!
Ingredients:
- 2 lbs. ground beef
- 1 large onion, diced
- 3 cloves garlic, minced
- 1 cup beef broth
- 1 cup frozen peas
- 1 cup frozen carrots
- 1 tsp. dried thyme
- 2 tsp. Worcestershire sauce
- 1 tsp. salt
- 1/2 tsp. black pepper
- 4 cups mashed potatoes
- 1/4 cup butter, melted
- 1/2 cup shredded cheddar cheese
Instructions:
-
Preheat oven to 375 degrees F.
-
In a large skillet, brown the ground beef over medium-high heat. Drain any excess fat.
-
Add the diced onion and minced garlic to the skillet and cook for 2-3 minutes, or until the onion is tender.
-
Add the beef broth, frozen peas, frozen carrots, thyme, Worcestershire sauce, salt, and black pepper to the skillet. Stir well to combine.
-
Simmer for 10-15 minutes, or until the vegetables are tender and the sauce has thickened.
-
Spoon the beef mixture into a 9x13 inch baking dish.
-
Spread the mashed potatoes over the beef mixture.
-
Brush the melted butter over the top of the mashed potatoes.
-
Sprinkle the shredded cheddar cheese over the top of the butter.
-
Bake for 20-25 minutes, or until the cheese is melted and bubbly.
Serve hot and enjoy!
